South Carolina shippers of containerized loads have found themselves at a competitive disadvantage with Georgia and North Carolina in the permitting of overweight container trucks. Georgia allows 100,000 lbs and North Carolina allows 94,500 lbs. South Carolina currently allows 90,000 lbs. SCDOT is aware of the commercial implications this creates for the trucking industry, however, SCDOT is also aware of the potential connection between increased truck weights and other highway-related issues.
Because of concerns about safety and damage to the state’s highways, SCDOT has developed a pilot program to test the effects of increasing permitted weights of containerized loads. This pilot program will run from January 1 through December 31, 2010, with an option to extend or revise it after analyzing the results. Participants in this pilot program will be limited to transporters of refrigerated containerized loads on routes designated by SCDOT.
