The state-maintained highway system consists of interstate routes, primary routes (SC and US routes), and secondary routes, totaling approximately 41,500 miles. The size of the road system in South Carolina translates into the fourth largest state-maintained system in the country while the state was just 15th largest in terms of population. Construction and maintenance of this system is one of our primary responsibilities.
