This portion of US 21 was designated by Act 73 of 1979 as simply "a scenic highway." It has sometimes been referred to as the Sea Island Scenic Highway.
This 19 mile byway scores high for its intrinsic scenic qualities. It is characterized by expansive vistas and natural beauty. The Hunting Island State Park, located at the end of the route, is one of South Carolina's best seaside preserves and it is home to a lovely light house.
